New shoes for monks

Christmas collection 2019

Shoes and sweaters for two monasteries in Bhutan

Thanks to the generosity of many friends the Christmas collection 2019 collected 1’400 Chf which were sent at the beginning of January 2020 in Bhutan to our friend, Khenpo Tenzin Thinley, who bought 34 shoes for the monks of the Pagar monastry (near Thimphu) and 36 jackets for the nuns of the Pema Choling Nunnery (in the Bumthang region).

Small monks in the middle of winter with crocs and without socks

When I visited the Pagar monastery in 2018, participating in a ritual, I saw very young cold monks clutching in their purple tunics, while they were reciting prayers. Some were walking around in the middle of winter with crocs; not all of them were wearing stockings. Speaking with the abbot of the monastery, Khenpo Tenzin T. agreed that the best way to use the money collected in Switzerland (400 francs) was to buy shoes for everyone. Each pair of shoes cost around 10 francs, the socks were given as gifts by the merchant.
